Just out of interest, how many of you in the South were taught about Bloody Sunday, NICRA, internment, the hunger strikes, gerrymandering etc? Keep seeing people say the history of British violence is taught in ROI, but, in my experience, it’s always seemed to end at the border.
I’ll never forget going to a March for Choice in Dublin and being horrified when I realised the crowd didn’t know who Bernadette Devlin McAliskey was.
I should clarify, when I’ve met someone outside Ulster with a wide knowledge of NI history/politics, it’s usually come from having Nordie parents or undertaking a substantial amount of self-study after school. Thank you all taking the time to respond! Everyone’s so different.
