Also this morning, I had to chauffeur my mum. Do you want to hear her General Election takes? OF COURSE YOU DO.
I told her about that old Boris Johnson article that someone had dug up, moaning about The Kids Of Today, in which he accused young Britons of having "an almost Nigerian interest in money". My mum (who is 3/4 Sierra Leonean and 1/4 Nigerian) laughed and laughed and laughed.
Then, when she had stopped laughing, she started quoting her long-time Nigerian friend Stella—"My Stella"—banging on about "Nigerians in London", who "park anywhere" and "don't respect the laws" and "end up tarring the rest of us with the same brush".
But then she added that she was fed with the racism of the election campaign. [She wasn't specific about which racism.] While she's lived here, my mum has mostly leaned Liberal/LibDem and I'm pretty sure she voted Remain, but she considers the privacy of the polling booth sacred.
Despite this, she then said that "Leave has a mandate. They've just got to get on with it."
I was genuinely surprised with both the sentiment and the vehemence with which it was delivered. Here endeth the views of probably about half of the Sierra Leonean population of Tamworth.
