Five things you might not know about getting a book published: A Thread
1. It is either INCREDIBLY slow or INCREDIBLY fast. There is no in between. Often the bits you& #39;re writing seem to be on speed and the time waiting for everything else is long AF.
2. We are not rolling in the money, as authors. If you& #39;re digital first there& #39;s no advance. If you have an advance you have to earn it out before you can get royalties. We get a percentage, our agents (quite rightly) get a percentage and piracy is a big pain in the behind.
3. You might get a say in your cover or your title and you might not. Sometimes it& #39;s worth fighting if you know in your guy you& #39;re right, and sometimes it& #39;s worth leaving it to the specialists and letting them try it out.
4. Someone else will always have written a book just like yours. And that& #39;s disheartening. BUT they& #39;re not YOU. I could describe five different, excellent, books with the same plot points. They& #39;re still all fabulous.
5. We& #39;re not competing against each other. There& #39;s room for everyone in the writing community. We need to make space (and be aware of privilege). We need to welcome debuts, but not ignore longstanding writers. We need to figure out what success means to us. And we need to write!
