I am an elected member of the @UniversityLeeds Council, its governing body. I wasn’t there at yesterday evening’s meeting. Senate had made a specific request to Council about the deductions of pay for taking strike action. Here is the Senate motion, passed by a majority.
Despite this being a clear, unambiguous request by Senate to Council, I hear that at first Council were just informed it had happened, and the matter would have been passed over had not a query resulted in a vote. They then voted against this sector best practice.
I hear that in mentioning three or four institutions who had already agreed to spread deductions, one member of Council or ex office exec member stated ‘that is not a competitor institution’. Makes you proud.
So, anyway, here are the institutions who so far we know, unlike Leeds, are showing some proper understanding of the root causes of the strike and therefore responding with some care and respect over deductions. See if you can guess which ones are not deemed to be ‘competitors’:
Aberdeen, Cambridge, City University of London, Essex, Royal Holloway, Sheffield, St Andrews, Stirling.
I recognise I am working here from anecdote as I was not present at Council. If any of it is deemed inaccurate, I’d be happy to circulate a statement on the matter. Ta.
By the way, talking to people, nobody can remember a clear decision of Senate being overturned. Historic.
