#OnThisDay in 1947 the #UN passed res 181, which later led to the birth of the State of Israel.

Resolution 181 called for two states for two peoples! The territory allocated for the Jewish state was tiny and did not even include #Jerusalem (the Zion in #Zionism.) Nevertheless, a responsible and courageous Jewish leadership accepted a tremendously painful compromise.

Even though the proposed boundaries presented a dramatic shrinking of the territory allocated for a Jewish National Home by the League of Nations, Jews in the Mandate and around the world celebrated jubilantly.

Tragically, this approach was met by a completely opposite one on the Palestinian & Arab side. Their embrace of extremism rather than pragmatism led to rejection of the Partition Plan & the launching of a war of annihilation against the Jewish state.

#Nov29 1947 is one of the most important junctures in the modern history of the Middle East. One can only imagine where we would all be today had the Palestinians chosen the solution of two nation states in 1947, instead of embarking on the violent and bloody path they chose.

Bizarrely, some choose #Nov29 to "show their solidarity" with the Palestinians. Why choose this specific day to commemorate extremism & their rejection of a chance to have their own state? Are they in solidarity with war & the dire consequences that had for the entire region?

#Nov29 should be remembered. We should highlight the outcomes of responsibility and realism as opposed to the consequences of fanaticism.

We should reflect on how and why the leadership of one side chose pragmatism and compromise, however painful, to bring about the establishment of the State of #Israel that today is a thriving, advanced and vibrant democracy.
