Often when I raise issues of ill treatment of precariously employed staff, I’m told it’s the fault of management. Yes! But if you’re a permanently employed member of a department how about ensuring that everyone (fixed term & hourly paid) is invited to the Xmas party this year! https://twitter.com/JennyAThatcher/status/1199613969520103424
How about when you return to work on the 5th December, you think about how to include precariously employed staff in forthcoming funding opportunities, to give them the chance to present their research at a department seminar series event?
How about each term you help to organise a social in the department to introduce all fixed term contract staff & make them feel included? How about you invited them to be part of a panel you’re organising at the next big subject area conference? &/or special issue you’re editing?
I’m sure this is happening, but again my DMs & TL are filled with example of fixed term academics (largely early career researchers) feeling excluded for the research culture & social engagement outreach of academic departments they are working in!
