There is a place called Scotlandpur in Talcher, Odisha. The name raises much curiosity among people yet the story behind it is not known to many. @OrissaPOSTLive did a story few years back but local narrative slightly differs. I spoke to a few people 1/ #Talcher #Odisha #History https://twitter.com/adityanag2002/status/818307247721750530
back home in Talcher and found the story. Here it goes: Talcher (a gadajaat) was ruled by a progressive Kishore Chandra Deb who ousted the local Khanduals. The king in pre independence era built a matchstick factory, hydroelectric power plant, etc #Talcher #Odisha #histroy #Kings
Kishore Chandra Deb had 2 sons - Hruday Chandra Deb & Pramod Chandra Deb. As customary, the elder son is heir to throne, the younger becomes 'patuaar'. So, about 4 kms from Talcher Palace (a beautiful structure) Kind built a palace. The place wasn't called #Scotlandpur then. 3/
The palace is popularly called as Pramod Praasaad (palace in Odia) and there were plans to develop a town around it, as Talcher town was developed around Talcher Palace. So, how did the name come about to be? 4/ #Scotlandpur #Talcher #Odisha
In pre-independent India, Britishers had in princely States, their men known as Political Agent. It is believed that the political agent in Talcher found the lush green, slightly cooler place where Pramod palace was built similar to Scotland. 5/ #Scotlandpur #Talcher #Odisha
And hence the name was changed. By other accounts, Pramod Chandra Deb went to Scotland and named it thus. Whatever it be, it is unique. Embarrassing that I didn't know the story of Scotlandpur until now. Apparently, a makeover of the palace is happening. 6/6 #Scotlandpur #Talcher
PS: Mother's paternal grandfather was manager of that matchstick factory (2nd tweet) as well as astrologer to Kishore Chandra Deb. #history #familyhistory
