This is why I became a librarian: a thread.
Today we had some visitors to my school library, a couple of teachers who were bringing along students from their school that will be starting at our school next year. As we chatted, I mentioned that I& #39;ve been a librarian for nearly
24 years, and spent the first 21 years in public libraries. One of the teachers asked if I& #39;d happened to work at Clendon Library, and yes, that was where I first started my library career. It turns out he had been a member of my teen book club, the first of its kind 2/5
In our library system. It was called YAK (young adult klub, the group named themselves at the time). He told me that our library and club saved him and kept him out of trouble as a kid, and that I& #39;d been the first person to introduce him to the internet. 3/5
He told me I& #39;d helped him become the person he is today. I can& #39;t tell you what that meant to me. Afterwards, I found out he& #39;s the Deputy Principal of the school he is at, and as soon as I saw his name, I clearly remembered him as one of my regulars from back then. 4/5
I really needed the reminder that what we do makes a difference. And I wish I& #39;d asked if he remembered the time we stayed on in the closed library and had races on wheely chairs through the shelves https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😂" title="Face with tears of joy" aria-label="Emoji: Face with tears of joy"> #LibraryLife
