When really trying to comfort someone, you have to put that spiritual mumbo jumbo aside.

Why?
Because they can't hear you from where they at.

First, you must acknowledge the vibration they're on; cater to what they're feeling at the moment, not where you'd like them to be.
One of the biggest errors we make when supporting someone through a crisis is to forget that when you're sad or upset, you're having a harder time hearing logic.

People must take you by the hand, start from where you are, and then slowly bring you to the highest loving thought.
When one is upset and we're trying to talk to them about spirituality, God or the universe, we will annoy them.

Hello!?
If they could hear God right now, they wouldn't be upset!

So, it's always best to tell them you understand how they feel and why they feel this way first.
