When Jason Garrett was first appointed head coach, he talked about a few “convictions” he had. From the first few days this included things like standing for his press conference rather than sitting as previous coaches did. (1/we’ll see)...
In the first game, he managed to get all the players to stand with their toes on the line for the national anthem, which no one cared about at the time. They have done the same ever since, which also hasn’t contributed to a single win...
He has made miserable mistakes of clock management that most teens playing Madden don’t make.
He has handed over the defense to two feeble old men of whom the game has clearly passed by. He has neglected special team despite talking in cliches about all three phases.
He advocates for a dumb contract extension for one aging running back (Demarco Murray), wasted his biggest personnel chip to date on Zeke Elliott and presumably cheered his already failed extension as well.
Jason Garrett has all the while orchestrated an offense that bills itself on taking what the defense gives you, but failed to realize that letting the defense choose your attack is a bad plan!
He let Tony Romo get out of shape. He played buddy-buddy with the like of Witten, Miles Austin and Murray while unwittingly creating a divide in the locker room among players who weren’t in his little club.
Multiple black players have questioned his ability to communicate with them. Say what you will about Dez and David Irving... those guys were useful players.
He has shown an inability to attract coaches from outside his sphere. That’s why company guy Keith O’Neill was promoted to special teams coach without any search...
At times this seems to have worked OK (The offense is improved under Kellen Moore), but Jason’s old-fashioner “convictions” have still hampered play-calling and in-game decision making.
I might go on... but my biggest beef with Jason Garrett is that he never assumes the blame. When asked a direct question, he always obfuscates...
It’a one thing to give the media bland answers. It’s another to blame execution for this, suggest you’d need to ask so-and-so for that. Ultimately he’s at the helm for everything that goes on...
After all, several years ago, he became a “walking around” coach, not a play-caller. So what does he really do?
I think his job is to make the Joneses feel included and important. To toe the company line. To not make any scenes and to downplay any scene see that may arise (Josh Brent, Greg Hardy). He is a PR guy playing head coach.
He has been I plenty of quarterback rooms, and he knows football to the extent that anyone who has his experience (MANY, MANY PEOPLE) do. But he is no savant.
He is just a guy who had a dad who had a favorable job and who had an agreeable temperament. And as I’ve said, in this franchise, he is the beneficiary of some privilege.
He will never win a damn thing.
I know Jason Garrett a little bit. A little bit. He does some good things through his charity. I think he thinks he’s a good coach doing things “the right way.” I also think he’s incredibly fake personally.
He is a smart guy. He evaluates the relationship he has with everyone and plays them for his own interests. That’s why the Joneses are so loyal to him. He has outsmarted them so far.
