Health insurance is a fucking joke in this country. Full disclosure - I am tired and am working on a tall neat glass of Weller SR.
My son was born at 31 weeks. We spent almost 45 days in the NICU. He was a warrior the entire time. Never needed oxygen, but had some blood issues that kept us there awhile. Nothing we could’ve done - my wife and I are pretty much Greek gods fitness wise. Life is weird sometimes
Anyway, as parents all know, when it comes to your little ones and the winter, the three dirtiest letters are RSV. It’s a virus that is basically a cold in adults but can cause massive issues in infants - especially premature ones
So, we got lucky. We have full health coverage and were completely taken care of until he was released from the NICU on day 43. But he was still at risk for RSV, so we figured we were shoo-in’s for the shot. For reference, the shot that prevents it costs $1500 per for 6 months
Well, come November 1 (my son turns 6 months, the cutoff, on November 2) we get a 45 page explanation on why @UHC is denying him for the shot. Evidently, because he didn’t need oxygen support for 30 days, he isn’t high enough risk (read: they’re too cheap.)
We can appeal, but that’s just paperwork at this point. On Friday, my son vomited all over me and spiked a fever. I took him to the urgent care clinic. You guessed it: RSV.
Then, we take him home and hope it’ll pass - until Saturday, when his fever spikes again and he is struggling to breathe. A trip to the ER and by 11 PM Saturday, we find out he now has pneumonia.
So now I have a 6 month old (4 month adjusted) boy with RSV and pneumonia - all because the cheap shits at @UHC wouldn’t pay for his shot. Well, assholes, jokes on you.
we had to have airlift nurses arrive Sunday morning to ambulance him to a higher level of care that day. If you stupid assholes @UHC would’ve just paid for his shot in the first place, my son wouldn’t have had to suffer and you would’ve saved major scratch
So, enjoy the bill for a helicopter and five days of hospitalization because your dumbfuck actuary decided my son wasn’t worth your vaccination. You suck. He’s going to be fine because he’s a fighter, but I can’t underscore how much you suck, @UHC
Just a reminder: he wouldn’t have had to deal with any of this if not for your dumbass actuary who decided you could save money by letting him get sick. You didn’t even save money, idiots. @UHC
