For anyone worried about ISIS in advance of tomorrow's #Wexford #BE, here's a thread with some facts to focus on: @cllrglawlor @malcolmbyrne @VeronaMurphyFG @JohnnyMythenSF Karin, Charlie, Melissa and Cinnamon.
Asylum seekers make up less than 0.09‰ of Irish popn.
In Wexford there are no direct Provision Centres, but currently 3 sites where people seeking international protection are in emergency accommodation. Total population is around 115, with almost a third being children. Some are of the Islamic faith and others Christian, some none
215 refugees came to Wexford as part of the EU sponsored resettlement programme in 2017/18. Mostly Syrian, some Iraqis, mostly Islamic but some Christian. 32 houses were sourced using some of an EU budget of roughly 5.7 million for resettlement in the county over 3ish years
Refugees living in Wexford pay rent for these houses. Those in emergency accommodation receive €38 p.w. Kids allowance €29. Many who came in 2017 are now working, paying tax. At least one has set up his own business. Asylum seekers can't work until 9 months after application
A six month permit is the longest work permit allowed but if application is still pending then another will be granted.
Ireland ranked around 55th in the world for granting asylum. 3,762 applications to end of September 2019
In Wexford, the largest population of non nationals are UK at 28%, Polish at 26%, Lithuania 5%, and Romania at 3%. Population density in Ireland is 65 per sq. km, UK is 260 per sq. km
Ireland signed the UN Convention on Human Rights in advance of the Good Friday Agreement so that our island would have peace and divisions healed. By doing this we also agreed to grant asylum to all people fleeing persecution (throwback also to 98 & Black 47, etc.
So I have a sh×× load more facts here (can't take credit as Emily, @billymurphy, John, Tiffy @_IHREC @POSIrl @DorasIRL did most of the work) available on request.. We can also quote our sources, many from @DeptJusticeIRL and @SorchaPollak who is a genuine fact guru
So Wexford, whatever you think about straight talking and political correctness, please be informed by actual facts, not fears. Suicide is far more likely to take a loved one and a Muslim more likely to save your life if you end up in Wexford or Waterford hospital
I'm immensely proud to have grown up Wexford & to come home to bring up my kids. I have seen refugee kids 💜 hurling more than my boys do. Our future is bright but it's up to us to reject division and hate.
Vote tomorrow for whoever tickles your fancy as long as you vote. Nite
