Thanksgiving is a weird holiday. It’s the one part of the year besides the religious holiday season where families can be together for an extended period of time. So black people come together & “celebrate”. They don’t celebrate the false narrative of pilgrims & Natives.
But rarely do they bring it up during thanksgiving. The first we did was last year. Even though we don’t actively celebrate thanksgiving’s false narrative just participating helps to perpetuate this holiday that essentially celebrate genocide.
Black people aren’t settlers but they can still help keep harmful traditions alive. We’ve accepted Indigenous People’s Day. What is the alt to Thanksgiving because PoC aren’t going to give up coming together on the one day of the year that guarantees an extended weekend.
How can we come together with Natives for an alt that honours their National Day of Mourning, keeps family gatherings & destroys the fase narrative that covers up genocide?
On Columbus Day Central Americans and Caribbean folks were fighting for recognition of what Columbus did to us and our indigenous communities. We need to support First Nations and Native Americans on this day too. Thanksgiving always felt awkward as an Afro-indigenous person
