Obviously it happens to both men and women, but pretending that fact alone makes up for vastly disproportionate statistics is not only willful ignorance, it’s actually excusing that abuse takes place at all. #IStandWithMelissa
At its core, feminism is about equality. At its core, “Men’s Rights Activism” or whatever, is a countermovement that perpetuates the idea that men should bottle our feelings and that anger is the only acceptable emotion to express, lest we be accused of acting “like a woman”.
Emotional imbalance and unchecked anger often leads to violence and therefore abuse.
And that anger usually stems from fear of being sized up by other men for not being “manly” enough. That’s why fuckboys exist. They’re afraid that if they’re not constantly pursuing women, their sexuality will be questioned, which threatens their sense of masculinity.
On more than one occasion, I’ve been met with raised eyebrows for referring to myself as feminist or for not taking offense to being labeled as such. I don’t think I should have to explain my position, but just in case you were wondering, here ya go.
