Woke up to this genocide belittling on the listserv of @cangermstudies. This is the second message of its variety. Both messages were in response to the association's open statement against Handke's Nobel price. And I am so very tired. In pain. Frustrated. Angry. /1
Note the refined insistence on academic nuance at the end, suggesting the association exec could not parse through complex political situation & the insistence that "all sides" were to blame (i.e., its hard to get a grasp on things). This goes against historic evidence. /2
Note the extensive labour to a refined genocide belittling personal historiography of a scholar of antisemitism. Note the alleged deep conviction to this topic without having read much of the current outpour of critique aligned with the statement of the association. /3
So much has been written on the matter and I want to send it all to this person. Great work by @SashaHemon @_edinh @maassp. /5
But this requires so so much work to do. And I am glad to do this work. Though I do it again. This is the second such message on the listserv. And I--junior faculty that I am--am again in the position of putting myself out there. Why are people not joining in on the listserv? /6
I know the temptation is real to keep silent & this will go away. There is great criticality involved in silence. But I am afraid that silence does a lot of unintended work. The ex-yugo kid whose family was murdered in the war like that of so many reads silence as complicity.
