Thread - assembling and discussing the idea of runaway #ClimateChange if we hit a tipping point - going for a non alarmist assembly of evidence that I can return to over time as new research emerges. /1
Speaking the Truth also means not feeding into Climate panic because you think it will make movement building easier - panic tends to lead to totalitarian solutions in the hope that some strong man will save us. These are not carbon neutral /3
Arctic sea ice is probably easiest way to explain a tipping point. White ice reflects heat back to space, blue ocean traps heat. The loss of white ice traps more heat leading to the loss of more ice, which leads to more heat - positive feedback loop till no ice left /4
The arctic is in big trouble because of this which is also causing changes in seawater chemistry. A massive 7c rise by 2100 is the 'business as usual' prediction for the arctic leading to extinction of cold loving organisms that call it home /5 http://oceanscientists.org/index.php/topics/arctic-sea-ice
This is the Nature paper showing 9 of the key tipping points are now tilting that prompted this thread. Nature is essentially the most highly regarded by far of the broad spectrum science journals https://twitter.com/jrockstrom/status/1199965936205389824
National Geographic have published a detailed explanation of the tipping point concept and it’s consequences https://www.nationalgeographic.com/science/2019/11/earth-tipping-point/
