A thanksgiving message for screenwriters.
8 or 9 years ago, I was a struggling writer who had yet to make my first sale. I had the good fortune of meeting a pre-arrow @mguggenheim. 1/
Marc and I bonded over the fact that we were both ex-lawyers, and he graciously invited me to the set of a pilot he was shooting in nyc. It was very exciting for me. 2/
Marc then took the time to sit down with me and talk about my goals. He was stressed about the pilot and I tried to empathize. But as someone who went to sleep every night praying someone would read/buy/make my work, it was hard for me to understand his stress. He had made it. 3/
I told him how I felt and he smiled and said something like it’s a good reminder to appreciate where he is. Now, years later, my career is closer to where his was then. And I have never been more stressed. The stakes feel so high. 4/
But as I remember this, I’m also thankful. That woman I was 8 years ago would be so envious of what I’m doing today. So the moral of the story is that no matter where we are on our screenwriting journey, we should be grateful. For the journey itself. For the things we learn. 5/
And not least of all, for the generous people who take time from their own writing/shooting/whatever to help us. Thank you. And happy thanksgiving!🍁 eot/
