I keep trying to write something about Dirty Blonde-gate, but I can't get past the first paragraph. It’s not even the marketing that’s biting me right now. The campaign is tone deaf. We’re all aware and have been for a long time.
It's the reaction to the opposition to the marketing that’s getting under my skin. I’m not going to RT the disgusting things I've read here, on Reddit and Facebook. If you want to see them they aren't hard to find.
People disparaging (and threatening) the folks quoted in the news pieces and female brewers who work to make great beer and a better industry. Shitty reviews on brewery FB pages that aren't about the beer, but about the fact that someone dared to speak up about an offensive ad.
There's a petition: “The signatures on this petition are to show public support for Nine Locks Brewing and reject the notion that their beer name "Dirty Blonde" is sexist, misogynistic or problematic.” To what end, who knows? But nearly 900 people signed it since yesterday.
The most common comment on the petition: There are bigger things to get upset about. Stop wasting time on this silly topic.
You know what women can't fix by being vocal on the internet/in the news? Most things. Rape threats to female journalists because they wrote a story. Abortion bans in the States. But maybe a few loud voices can help women stop rolling their eyes when they drive across the bridge.
I speak for me, not all women, but 2019 has been an exceptionally dispiriting year to be a woman on the internet. This issue may be a drop in the ocean, but it doesn't help.
