Corbyn has often been compared with Michael Foot which is an insult to the latter who was a straight talking honest politician, an intellectual titan, an orator of the highest rank & a man who appreciated different POV needed to be present at the top table. Some observations:
Like Jez, Foot was a dedicated unilateralist but he was up front about it, going into the 1983 election pledged to give up nuclear weapons. Corbyn is also a lifelong unilateralist and even made it part of his leadership campaign in 2015. But.....
Corbyn has more control of the Labour Party than any other leader in its history. He could have, if he wanted to, turn Labour into a unilateralist party once more. He hasn't done so. As a consequence his manifesto is pledged to renew Trident.
That's right. The great 'man of peace' is promising to update and upgrade Britain's nuclear capability. The way he's fought to prevent Labour from backing Remain shows he gets his way if he wants to. He hasn't even tried. Out and out hypocrite
But he hasn't gone far enough on Europe. Here too he runs away through expediency. In the 2015 leadership campaign he was the only candidate to refuse to commit himself to backing Remain in a referendum just nine months away.
Michael Foot also wanted to quit then then European Community. He was a leading figure in the 'No' campaign in 1975 & fought the 1983 election on a specific pledge to leave within the lifetime of the next parliament. His position was essentially the same in the opposite ....
direction as LD today. Winning the election would be a mandate with no need for a second referendum.
And while Foot was a unilateralist he was no pacifist and certainly not a pacifist only if it's western action that's being taken. He was one of the authors of 'The Guilty Men' an indictment of pre-war appeasers. His speech endorsing the Falklands War was stirring
Also unlike Corbyn Foot never adopted a 'no enemies on he left' position. He was a parliamentarian who had no time for so-called 'revolutionary' socialism. It was under Foot that the process of expelling Militant began. Corbyn was the leader of the campaign to keep them in
So when anyone - left or right - makes the comparison between the two they are - IMO - talking nonsense. Foot gave prominent Shadow roles to those not his natural allies - Healey & Hattersley to cite just two. Corbyn surrounds himself with sycophants like Burgon & Rayner
Michael Foot fought to keep the Labour Party together. he said of would-be defectors to the SDP "I want them all to stay" No supporter of Foot ever told anyone to 'fuck off & join the Tories' Foot was a giant and not one whose shoulders Corbyn is standing on.
