My family descends from William Bradford, who came over on the Mayflower & was Governor of Plimouth* Plantation

* Original spelling
I grew up near a town called Phillipston, MA, named for the Wampanoag chief Metacomet, who adopted the name "Philip"
King Philip's War - also known as the First Indian War, the Great Narragansett War or Metacom’s Rebellion - happened there, after the white colonists broke a peace treaty with the Wampanoag, insisting they surrender their guns

Couldn't have armed PoC, even in 1671!
The War is seen by historians as the Native Americans' last-ditch effort to avoid recognizing English authority & stop English settlement on their lands
It's amazing how much "colonial history" I grew up with, but how little of it was ever told through the lens of the Native Americans my ancestors destroyed
As you celebrate Thanksgiving please also spend time thinking about America's first sin - the racist colonization & expansion of white people into ALREADY INHABITED lands - & its continuing negative impact on Native Americans - & other PoC - in 2019
