Okay, so I had a bit of a "moment" last night and posted this rant. Normally I would delete something where I swear profusely throughout, but in the cold light of day, and swearing aside, I stand by the sentiment of my comments. 1/6 https://twitter.com/thefishareloose/status/1199794655572963333
Bigotry, or the countenance of it in order to get something you want, is endemic in politics in general. It's the nature of the beast. You believe your cause is superior to someone else's so anything seen as an obstacle to that is automatically something to be disregarded. 2/6
We have this fantastic ability though to know and act on two things at once. You can support a party or a cause and still confront the issues within it. In fact if you want your cause to succeed you have an obligation to do so. 3/6
While the outcomes and levels may be, and obviously are, different, at its core there is little difference between the actions of ICE and those who dismiss allegations of antisemitism, Islamophobia etc etc. People do it because they believe their cause is justified. 4/6
It's easy to acknowledge that those entrapping migrant students in the US are wrong, but the reason those actions have been taken is become someone, somewhere, has decided that they are appropriate under their moral philosophy and for what they perceive as a "greater good". 5/6
So, while I could've phrased last night's rant better the sentiment stands. You can acknowledge all forms of bigotry are prevalent in politics without condoning or dismissing them. What you can't do is claim allowing harm and upset to others is justified for a "greater good" 6/6
