Boris Johnson is a blusterer who presents a rose-tinted view of the UK and is a perpetual optimist, who believes everything is going 'gangbusters'. Jez says that everything in the UK is broken and needs fixing through massive state intervention. 1/4
2/4 This binary is hopelessly inadequate for explaining the reality of the challenges and opportunities we face. But from a political perspective, it pitches someone who is seen as positive against someone who is seen as negative. My hunch is that misplaced optimism wins out.
3/4 The British left is haunted and obsessed by the past. It returns constantly to the Coalition government, the Iraq War, Blair, Margaret Thatcher. Corbyn fumes at the betrayals and defeats of the past and wants his clapped-out 1980s DeLorean to take him back to press reset.
4/4 For people such as Johnson and his mate Trump, the past is another country. Who cares what happened before? We can just pretend it never did and move on. What we believed on Thursday, we don't need to believe on Friday. In this world of fantasy, there is a lot of freedom.
