So I get questions sometimes from exasperated devs wondering why they don't make it onto the channel. Awkward convo time but I feel like I should put the info out there for how I select games and why priorities end up on some games vs. others.
Fact of the matter is, it's harder than ever to promote an indie game. There's a ton of stuff coming out. At most there's 12 slots a week at my channel, usually less where games get featured. I get a ton of quality games offered per week. Usually 10-30 games a week.
Ultimately on top of competing for limited slots you're also competing with all those other developers who are each offering diverse titles. I select based on quality, art design, genres that are popular with my viewers, and genres that I personally find to be appealing.
I've had to push back coverage on literally thousands of games over my career for loads of reasons. Sometimes its early access and the game isn't ready yet and my coverage will hurt you more than help. Sometimes it's a particularly crazy week and uniqueness won the day.
Ultimately a lot of the decisions are going to be based on whether or not I like the game and how well the game sells itself as a cohesive idea. The games that do best in that regard go up first as close to their release date as possible.
It's not a decision based on anything personal, but usually I'll get around to most of the stuff offered so long as the game is good. Some stuff slips through the cracks in the chaos as well. Being indie nowadays is nuts as hell and me missing your title isn't disrespect based.
At the end of the thread my advice is : Make your email pop. Have gifs, trailers, steam link ready to go. Make your presskit snap. Logos, hi res wallpapers, and materials to get across the core gameplay loop of your title. Be personable. HERE GAEM PLAY OR I SCREAM doesnt fly.
I can usually pick what's going to get featured based on the email materials / steam page alone. I've gotten pretty good at seeing diamonds of all kinds over the years. Most other content creators do the same thing with their own criteria for selection. Good luck out there.
