The outright abandonment of human rights propaganda would not allow for wars of interest to be waged under the auspices of humanitarian war. The author as much as admits it. Kudos for the honesty @NYMag.

Imagine the apologists of Charles V's imperialism dropping the facade of universal Christian monarchy & just outright stating that the empire was there to advance its power, crush opponents (incl other Christians), enrich the House of Habsburg etc. That's what you have here.
