For those playing at home, and wondering what the PM is referring to when he said Labor cut off a veteran (Member for Herbert, Phil Thompson) talking about veterans suicide... (THREAD) #auspol
Mr Thompson was speaking on a bill before the House, the "Defence Service Homes Amendment Bill 2019".

The bill is aimed at expanding coverage for all veterans to access the Defence Service Homes
Insurance Scheme (cont.)
Shadow Veterans Minister Shayne Neumann has just finished speaking on the bill.

Phil Thompson took to his feet to hit back at some of what was said (cont.)
Mr Thompson said he'd address some of the "falsehoods" put forward by Mr Neumann, then said he would talk about the bill, as well as suicide prevention (cont.)
Mr Thompson took a swipe at his fellow Queenslander, saying his criticism was unfounded as a person living in "the south east corner", and he had no idea about the issues facing north Queensland (cont.)
It then degenerated. The record shows Mr Neumann stood up, moved a motion the "member no longer be heard", which effectively cuts him off.

They voted. Labor lost 58 to 75 votes (cont.)
Mr Thompson got to continue his speech. He welcomed the bill giving more veterans access to cheaper housing, saying cost of living pressures can increase suicide risk. (cont.)
A Liberal colleague, Andrew Wallace asked the House to give Mr Thompson more time to make his point.

No one objected.

Mr Thompson got to make his full speech, including speaking of friends and fellow servicemen and women who had experienced suicide (cont.)
That's why the PM keeps mentioning it in #qt today.

Mr Thompson hadn't reached his point about veterans suicide when he was cut off. But then got his chance after the vote to gag him.
