alright, who's ready for the ohio state week gif thread
1927. yeah, you're damn right, 1927. michigan chooses the ohio state game to dedicate fielding h. yost's giant hole in the ground, michigan stadium.
i have no idea what's happening in this clip. michigan wins, 21-0.
1940: the tom harmon game. passing (in this instance), running, kicking, he does everything.
harmon played the first 59 minutes, 22 seconds of the game, accounted for three tds and four extra points, rushed for 152 yards (several of them in this gif), returned a punt 35 yards, picked off a pass, and handled punting. michigan, 40-0. ohio stadium gives harmon a standing o.
1950: the snow bowl. it's ten degrees with wind gusts near 30 mph and two inches of snow accumulating per hour at ohio stadium. the buckeyes are given the choice to cancel the game and win the big ten. they choose not to. the game is a farce featuring 45 punts.
the only touchdown of the day comes when michigan's tony momsen recovers the punt he blocked with 20 seconds left in the first half. the buckeyes could've run another offensive play and killed the clock but feared a fumble.
michigan, 9-3. the wolverines win the big ten title and go to the rose bowl.
1964: with ohio state riding a four-game winning streak in the series, the rivals face off for the conference title. it's so cold and icy that each team chooses to kick off to open both halves. michigan gets the game's only touchdown on this bob timberlake pass to jim detweiler.
dick volk takes over, setting up a timberlake field goal with a long punt return and intercepting two passes. michigan, 10-0.
1969: bo schembechler is michigan's new head coach after bump elliott is fired following the infamous 50-14 "couldn't go for three" loss in ohio stadium. undefeated #1 ohio state is arguably woody hayes's best team ever. osu takes a 12-7 lead before garvie craw gets his 2nd td.
(color television: good for football)

billy taylor rushes for a team-high 84 yards. this one's a beaut.
barry pierson breaks off a huge punt return near the end of the first half to set up a don moorhead touchdown plunge, which gives the wolverines a 24-12 halftime lead.
here's the moorhead td, featuring a jubilant dan dierdorf
ohio state throws six interceptions, with pierson picking off three by himself.
the final seconds tick off and the big house becomes a madhouse.
the iconic shot: captain jim mandich is carried off the field. michigan, 24-12.
this seems like a good time to take a break, here's woody being a dick to some kid on the ohio state sideline during the '69 game.
and here's bo being carried off the field.
1971: michigan enters the game undefeated, but ohio state is poised to pull the upset with a 7-3 lead entering the final two minutes. then, a pitch to billy taylor.
thom darden seals the win with a leaping pick over osu's dick wakefield. woody hayes disagrees with the no-call. michigan, 10-7.
1973: the banner incident
#4 michigan and #1 ohio state both enter the game undefeated. dennis franklin ties the game at ten in the fourth quarter, but mike lantry can't hit two field goal tries for the win. big ten athletic directors vote osu to the rose bowl. bo never forgets, or forgives.
1976: it takes a couple more years to get revenge on the buckeyes, though. after russell davis runs in the first of his two touchdowns, woody wants a procedure penalty and pulls off the rare double hat spike.
rob lytle runs for 165 yards and this touchdown on 28 carries.
the buckeyes can't do much of anything right.
michigan, 22-0.
1977: an ugly game, even by the era's standards. rick leach throws for 55 yards on 3/9 passing and rushes for 23 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. he's the star of the team.
what the game lacks in offensive firepower, however, it makes up for in toilet paper.
osu kicks a field goal to draw within eight. ron simpkins and john anderson string out a fourth-and-two pitch.
woody looks on as michigan runs out the clock. 14-6, wolverines.
1978: leach hits rodney feaster with an early touchdown strike.
the defense doesn't give up a touchdown to the buckeyes for the third straight year. jerry meter with the strip-sack on art schlichter and andy cannavino gets the recovery here.
leach finds roosevelt smith out of the backfield for his second touchdown pass.
down 14-3, the buckeyes get desperate.
bo is carried off the field again. weeks later, woody punches a clemson player, ending the ten-year war.

michigan, 14-3.
bo, 5-4-1.
that's all for now. i'll flip over to the '80s tomorrow.
1980: we're into the earle bruce era for ohio state. the buckeyes enter the game ranked fifth, michigan tenth, and once again this one's for the title. it's a grind. some strong running from butch woolfolk sets up an ali haji-sheikh field goal into the "BEAT MICH" placards.
the game features only one more score, a diving anthony carter touchdown catch from john wangler. michigan, 9-3.
1983: a much more exciting affair. steve smith hits triando markray for a 67-yard touchdown to give michigan a 10-3 lead at the half.
after the teams trade scores in the third quarter, the buckeyes try to run the fumblerooski but their guard never gets his hands on the ball. instead, michigan's mike hammerstein grabs it in the chaos.
smith capitalizes with a touchdown throw to eric kattus, who is showered in teammates and toilet paper. ohio state's comeback attempt runs out of time. 24-21, michigan.
1985: cbs intro time
eric kattus is still catching touchdowns. now they're coming from jim harbaugh.
the vaunted '85 defense shuts down ohio state star running back keith byars, who runs for 35 yards on 12 carries. receiver cris carter accounts for 90 of osu's 269 total yards, and even much of his production came early.
the buckeyes manage to cut the lead to three in the fourth quarter. a couple plays later, however, they send a blitz at jim harbaugh, who lobs a ball for ohio native john kolesar. michigan, 27-17.
1986: harbaugh has some pregame thoughts (sound on)
early on, harbaugh's prediction looks disastrous. carter and the buckeyes take a 14-6 lead into the half. jamie morris helps pull his quarterback's ass out of the fire with 210 rushing yards, 151 of them coming in the second half.
morris runs in two touchdowns, thomas wilcher adds another, and ohio state misses a 45-yard field goal with a minute to go. michigan, 26-24.
1988: a classic, though it doesn't look so early. michigan takes a 20-0 lead into the half despite having backup quarterback demetrius brown filling in for the injured michael taylor. it looks easy on this hookup with greg mcmurtry.
leroy hoard, who mostly plays halfback in this game but also moonlights at fullback, has a dominant 158-yard, two-touchdown performance.
the buckeyes go on a 24-point run before the teams trade touchdowns. john kolesar takes over, returning a kickoff to midfield, then... well, the gif kinda tells the whole story.
(i should've mentioned we were into the john cooper era but that felt like a spoiler.)

michigan, 34-31.
1989: bo's last home game. leroy hoard and jarrod bunch set a very physical tone.
ouch.
the late vada murray gets way up to block an ohio state field goal. tripp welborne would do the same on an extra point later in the game.
todd plate's second interception of the day preserves a 21-18 lead late in the fourth quarter.
a classic battle of wits (and some disrespekt)
bunch seals the win with a bruising touchdown.
as a rose waves in the foreground, bo walks off the michigan stadium field after the game one last time. michigan, 28-18.
1990: ohio state carries a 13-6 lead into the fourth quarter before elvis grbac ties it up on a touchdown pass to desmond howard.
with osu at their own 29-yard line and under two minutes to go, john cooper calls to go for it on fourth and one. michigan's entire defense stuffs osu quarterback greg frey. (yes, future michigan o-line coach greg frey.)
the buckeyes have no timeouts and no means to stop michigan from setting up j.d. carlson's 37-yard game-winner as time expires. gary moeller beats his alma mater in his first try as head coach. michigan, 16-13.
1991: shortly before the game, ohio state announces a three-year extension for john cooper. michigan fakes an early field goal, and while fullback greg mcthomas is stopped short of the goal line, he picks up the first down, setting up a burnie legette td plunge.
michigan runs out to a 17-3 lead and forces an ohio state punt to desmond howard.

goodbye. hello heisman.
let's watch that again
if there's any doubt left about the game or the heisman, howard dispels it with not one...
...but two incredible catches. michigan, 31-3.
1993: after a tie (gross) in '92, michigan gets back into beat 'em down mode. mercury hayes makes a spectacular adjustment to this todd collins pass for the game's first score.
even with joey galloway, it's a bad idea to take a shot at ty law. this is the first of his two interceptions.
derrick alexander's diving catch on what qualifies as michigan trickery sets up a td plunge by fullback jon ritchie.
i grade this extension an a+. michigan, 28-0.
1995: after coop finally gets on the board in '94, he brings the undefeated, second-ranked buckeyes to ann arbor. his offense boasts soon-to-be heisman winner eddie george (tommy frazier was robbed), terry glenn, and orlando pace. the defense has shawn springs and mike vrabel.
michigan is a disappointing 4-3 in the big ten, but they can play spoiler and send northwestern, of all teams, to the rose bowl. they have tim biakabutuka. this is his first carry.
this is his second carry.
after five carries, biakabutuka has 104 yards.
he is far from done.
bobby hoying and terry glenn had picked a bit on freshman cornerback charles woodson early in the game. woodson puts a stop to that.
we now return to the paving.
mike vrabel meets biakabutuka at the line. it goes about as well as the secondary trying to haul him down on first contact.
freshman clarence williams out of cass tech plays the role of touchdown vulture for the second time in place of an exhausted biakabutuka.
in the fourth quarter, touchdown tim finally gets his touchdown. he finishes the game with 313 yards on 37 carries.
any hope of a miracle comeback ends when woodson outleaps glenn for his second interception and puts him on the deck twice in one play.
michigan, 31-23. you're welcome, northwestern.
1996: it'd be a real shame if a disappointing michigan squad knocked off an undefeated ohio state team for a second straight year. a real, real shame.

brian griese takes over from an injured scott dreisbach, tai streets runs a slant, and heeeeeeeeeere we go.
on the last play of the third quarter, remy hamilton drills a 44-yard field goal to give michigan a 10-9 lead. lloyd carr is... pleased, i think?
hamilton adds another field goal in the fourth. joe germaine gets a last-gasp shot that ends when marcus ray picks off a hail mary.
it happens again. michigan, 13-9.
đź“Ł gonna hold the next one until after hoops is over.
1997: the tables have turned, with #4 ohio state getting the chance to spoil #1 michigan's dream season. take it away, keith.
the matchup everyone wants to watch: charles woodson vs david boston.
in the first half, woodson outproduces boston *as a receiver* despite getting plenty of pre-snap attention. this sets up the game's first score, a short anthony thomas touchdown plunge.
michigan stops the buckeyes on the ensuing drive. brent bartholomew booms his punt. two filthy cuts later, touchdown, no flags. woodson's teammates tackle him in the end zone before he can strike the heisman pose.
they aren't cheering for the red sox.
stanley jackson leads the bucks deep into michigan territory early in the third quarter, only to decide he should test woodson on a slant.
that proves to be stanley's second-worst decision of the day. on the next drive, he brilliantly escapes a sack, then throws the ball directly to andre weathers. weathers is michigan's other cornerback.
joe germaine replaces jackson and gets ohio state back into the game, though not without putting boston—and marcus ray—on a sports illustrated cover.
remarkably, the bucks have a chance to win it late. michigan's defense doesn't let them get within sniffing distance of a winning touchdown.
20-14, eventual national champions.
1999: ohio state jumps out to a 17-10 lead and looks poised to go up two scores. while todd howard chases down jonathan wells to prevent a touchdown, the buckeyes still have first and goal.
howard's trackdown looks a lot more important when tommy hendricks sacks steve bellisari on third down.
and even more so when the buckeyes blow the ensuing field goal attempt.
following an ian gold interception in ohio state territory, tom brady finds shawn thompson for the tying touchdown.
in the fourth quarter, james whitley forces a fumble that catches x games-worthy air before cato june recovers for michigan.
after an eternity and a half in the pocket, brady hits marquise walker, who runs the wolverines into the red zone.
brady hits walker in the flat on the next play. walker finds the pylon. ohio state's desperation drive falls well short. michigan, 24-17.
2000: after ohio state takes an early 9-0 lead, anthony thomas takes a screen pass all the way. keep an eye on left guard steve hutchinson. also right guard jonathan goodwin. watch this at least three times, is what i'm saying.
drew henson drops one in to david terrell for their second touchdown connection of the day.
after michigan takes a 1969 tribute 24-12 lead, julius curry pick-sixes bellisari.
ohio state makes a late charge to draw within a score, but a fourth-and-one with just over three minutes to play is stonewalled by victor hobson and larry foote.
michigan drives to the precipice of the goal line but lloyd carr faces a decision on fourth down: go up eight points or go for the kill? he chooses kill. michigan, 38-26.
2003: the 100th edition of the game is, fittingly, for the big ten title and a spot in the rose bowl. in a scoreless game late in the first quarter, john navarre splits out wide and steve breaston takes the snap for an option at the goal line.
navarre to braylon, part one.
navarre to braylon, part two.
when ohio state finally answers, chris perry hits back with a highlight-reel touchdown run.
the buckeyes eventually draw within seven. again, perry.
michigan, 35-21.
2011: brady hoke vs interim head coach luke fickell! but also denard robinson vs braxton miller!

it's a fireworks show.
i do not believe this was the intended route combination.
🎇🎇🎇
we interrupt the show for a mortified punter. sorry, will hagerup.
denard finds kevin koger all alone to push the lead to two possessions in the fourth quarter.
denard accounts for five touchdowns, three through the air and two on the ground.
as is the pattern, ohio state has a chance to win it late, and braxton miller thankfully misses an open deep shot to devier posey that briefly stops the hearts of most in attendance. courtney avery ends the threat for good.
michigan, 40-34.
go blue. beat ohio.
