I think I finally noticed MK11’s biggest issue with their Story.

It isn’t the concept or Overall narrative, It’s the CHARACTERS.
Now, MK11’s Story is in and of itself... stupid. If not by Fighting game’s standards, then it’s by their own standards. But it’s not like the story was why it felt so lackluster, since the story concepts behind Their previous games weren’t that interesting either
However, If Films and media has taught us anything, It’s that a basic plot could be made interesting if the characters are interesting.

Take Aladdin for example. The story is pretty basic, But The Genie adds a little Spice to the Film and makes it pop
And when you look back at NRS’s previous games, this was exactly what made it work. The story backed by an enjoyable cast of characters with Established personalities and Ideas.

But why didn’t it for MK11?
I didn’t notice this until Sindel’s Story Reveal. Where they took a 3 dimensional villain and turned her into a generic, two dimensional Evil Queen.

That’s when it hit me. These characters altogether are... Generic
These characters and they’re personalities are so Basic and uninteresting, that it feels Boring to watch them.

Cassie is a Millennial

Johnny Cage is the Punny Dad.

And Sonya is Ronda Rousey pretending to be Sonya.
These characters fail to be anything more than the tropes their characters fall under and it Hinders them.

Villains can’t be Complex or Deep, because they’re only Allowed to be Evil.
Kotal Kahn’s entire character is “Big, Noble, Warrior King” who fights Shao Kahn, the “Big, Evil, Warrior King”

Noob is “Edgy Shadow Guy” instead of a Former hero who’s death and lust for power caused him to grow Corrupt.
Because everyone feels Generic, they lack the Charisma or general connection to the story how will Anyone gain interest in this Overused story Concept?
