I’m a professor and I’m proud to join my colleagues in support of the #UCUCardiff #UCUstrike 1/6
I’m fortunate to have a permanent job that, on the whole, I love. But academic precarity really bothers me: the lack of investment in core funded posts, the workload model, cuts to pensions 2/6
Going on strike is far from easy. It’s not just the financial loss, it’s the emotional labour. You worry about letting your students and colleagues down. If you don’t do so much teaching, you wonder whether your action will have any impact 3/6
What I learned from last year’s strike was an absolute sense of solidarity with colleagues on the picket line. There was no judgement about who was or who wasn’t on strike, how much or how little they were doing 4/6
Do what you can, whether it’s taking one day or eight days of action, stopping to say hello to co-workers on the picket, or simply a message of support. It will make a difference 5/6
To me, this is ALL about being part of the University. We can be good colleagues/workers AND go on strike; they are not mutually exclusive things. Let’s be kind to ourselves and others 6/6
