Everyone is "carried" to some degree in the same way a violinist is carried by a violin: the violinist isn't responsible for the violin sounding like a violin, but they have a unique skill set that brings that inherently good sound out

That said, the idea of being carried
is a product of comparing our skill levels by a third-party metric: tournament results. Tourney results in any fighting game don't isolate or account for different variables, so on one hand, we're applying different skill sets, but being judged by the ability to
play fugue on an electric guitar or a choral on a tuba. Each has their unique challenges, but what makes this idea somewhat toxic is the inescapably flawed way of structuring competition: we basically agree on rock music, while some characters are trombones
so naturally someone who picks a guitar (Snake) is gonna have a much easier time succeeding under the given objective of playing rock music than someone who tries to play a guitar solo with a clarinet (it can be done! I've seen it!)
every instrument is inclined to a different skill set, and for that reason characters can either amplify or rarefy our respective skill sets and manifests those skills in ways we can't take full credit for as a violinist can't take credit for a violin sounding as it does
Applying my skill set as a guitarist to a violin would yield... interesting results, and for that reason, I don't think to myself that I'm a poorer musician for not being able to make music with a violin rather than a guitar
similarly, a person who uses Pikachu shouldn't think of themselves as poorer Smash players for not succeeding with a less privileged character. They apply their skills through a medium that suits those skills and in a system that just so happens to reward them
now this isn't to say people can't be better or worse than each other, but that skill doesn't exist in a vacuum and needs some kind of medium that rewards and punishes you in different ways
@WDBTHtGP brought up a point that makes me wanna clarify something: your character CAN carry you in the sense that they relieve you of your need for certain skills that the character naturally embodies, but the point is that EVERY character carries us in some form
Ganon carries me in dealing with hitbox precision esp. with respect to the Belmonts. I can be precise, but Ganon diminishes the need for pinpoint accuracy
Pika carries people with respect to a lot of things under the definition that "to carry" means to bypass or diminish the need for certain skills, but the point is that no character will ever require a perfectly balanced totality of skills
btw this isn't me encouraging people who legitimately are "too" carried by good characters to just carry on and not critically consider the weaknesses their character covers for them
and by "too carried" I mean you use a basically flawless character but have a hard time performing well at high levels
