to start it off with a hard to swallow pill, the most common & main reason for extinction (according to @NatGeo) are...
humans burning fossil fuels are the main cause for global warming; which is also the main reason why whales beach themselves and walruses jump off cliffs. not enough media coverage about it for obvious reasons being humans care more about... materialistic things i suppose.
according to many reports and researches, less than 5%, take or give, of the ocean have been discovered. meaning 95% is undiscovered and iโll leave it to you to imagine how many marine we missed on discovering and have probably went extinct before we had the chance to do so.

officially confirmed of being extinct in 2008 after not being seen for 50 years. besides sharks being one of itโs predators, humansโ overhunting for seals for oil and overfishing of their food sources.

went extinct at the turn of the 20th century due to: exploitation. sea minks were pursued by fur traders due to itโs large size.

first found in 1741 but went extinct winthin 27 years, the stellarโs sea cow has many causes for extinction but itโs main is overharvesting from people as a source of food.

the biggest coral reef we know as ๐จ๐ณ๐ฆ๐ข๐ต ๐ฃ๐ข๐ณ๐ณ๐ช๐ฆ๐ณ ๐ณ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ง has completely died due to the rise of temperature in water. coral reefs are homes to so many marine animals and the biggest one (we discovered) is already dead.
till today, more than tens of marine animals are endangeredโdirectly because of humans. not by global warming but by overhunting, dropping toxic wastes in the ocean, skinning them alive, etc. the hawksbill turtle, vaquitas, blue whales and ridleyโs sea turtle are example (1).
mining, coastal development, marine tourism, marine farming, human encroachment, etc. example (2) of critically endangered marine animals: stellar sea lions, humpback whales, hectorโs dolphin and hawaiian monk seals.
overfishing, pollution, dam/bridge construction, private/commercial boating and commercial whaling, need i continue? last example of endangered marine animals: hammerhead sharks, green turtles, sea otters and florida mantees.
in conclusion: humans are the scariest. itโs not the sharks nor the seals, itโs homosapiens. thatโs why i find it extremely hilarious when people claim that human kind are fragile & not that strong against โsea monstersโ the true monsters are you. the amount of disgust..
and itโs! bewildering! how no matter how many animals have went extinct, hunting alongside with all itโs similarities are still allowed, itโs as if humans donโt care about this world.... oh wait. my bad. humans really donโt care about this world.
please raise awareness. please stop littering in the ocean. please stop spilling toxic waste in oceans. there are so many alternatives than burning fossil fuelsโ stop hunting, stop taking them out of their natural habitats, stop harvesting and just stop being monsters.
