👍 @PodsUpNorth podcasting conference in Manchester:
BBC Sounds & commissioning.
Spotify push for diversity, recommendations & party!
@JohnGibbonsBlog: audio paywall works.
@CParks1976 bullish on listener donations.
How to win @BritPodAwards

Some personal highlights [THREAD]
1/ John Gibbons ( @johngibbonsblog): we too run a profitable, listener-supported podcast.

@TheAnfieldWrap: Staff of 14.
~70% of revenue from listeners (~12,000 paying subscribers, most paying ÂŁ7/mo.)
Be open w/ fans; share wins, explain expenses, take feedback when below par, etc
…🙌 @johngibbonsblog: Don't try to change users' behaviour. Sometimes you see podcasters saying, "Well you like podcasts, great, so we're gonna give you something different". This typically doesn't work! (Example: Failed magazine.)

*I agree! Go to where your fans already are!*
2/ Both @SpotifyForPodcasters sessions.
Discovery: "Daily Podcasts" playlist, "Podcasts you might like", etc
SoundUp diversity push (met two winners later in the day).
@Alex_Adey's on-stage chat w/ @GayNongay.
And the @Spotify-funded party later – thanks!

3/ BBC Sounds Controller, Jonathan Wall ( @wallj10)

@BBCiPlayerRadio now retired, @BBCSounds is growing fast (~2.7m weekly listeners) https://twitter.com/wallj10/status/1185315753312038914
…BBC Sounds’ @wallj10:

We haven't scratched the surface of: innovation, formats, durations, story-telling, cross-media (e.g., Brexitcast as TV show), partnerships.

My job includes making sure that the UK has global hits.
Peter Crouch gets over half a million downloads per ep.
…Advice from @wallj10: Focus!
Be the best at something.
Many org's in USA trying to do a bit of everything.
What will you be known for? Story-telling? Working with stars? Short form?
If you're [one of the 2-3] best at drama, or crime, or ___, commissioners might be interested👀
…Advice from @wallj10: Partner up!
Podcasting is becoming more professional and polished… if you want to catch attention of BBC commissioners, maybe partner up. Even BBC has to be very thoughtful about details like cover art.
…Sounds wants to be the best aggregator of podcasts in UK (including non-BBC shows next yr).
[With Spotify exclusives, Luminary, etc], "every podcast on an RSS feed is gonna be everywhere" is already beginning to change. There's an opportunity to be a "force-for-good" aggregator
4/ Tips from @matt for entering @BritPodAwards.

- "Best podcasts don’t win awards, best entries do."
- Create different entries for different categories.
- Don’t leave it until the last minute. ("2/3 of our entries do arrive on the last day 😂")

5/ Vulnerability talk by @ClareFreeman_ of the The #SlimmingWorld Podcast (and others) and Natalie Silverman ( @fertilitypoddy).
Theme in a few sessions: duty of care, to yourself and your listeners. What if your sharing leads to many folks contacting you? https://twitter.com/ClareFreeman_/status/1198292003085324289
6/ Kat & Jen @TheNakedPodcast tips:
✅ If you want guests to be vulnerable (⇒honest), get naked.
✅ Have a structure(!). Polished into & outro, not time-consuming rambles. Jingles and/or produced clips ("you're listening to...") to divide segments, and/or smooth transitions.
7/ @KatyLeeson on imposter syndrome.
Haters gonna hate. (You, go and create!)
Don't be afraid to test new things.
Stay true to your WHY.
Controversy as free publicity.

BTW… Mancheter… What an under-rated, dynamic city! One of the fastest-growing in Europe. Friendly locals, full of proud stats about their town.

With Media City up the road and 2-day @PodsUpNorth in the diary for next year, is Manchester the rising second city of UK podcasting?
