The last three months in #scotland I’ve been getting to know the #theatre scene again. I’ve seen a huge amount of shows, including some theatre for young audiences and I’m just incredibly excited and inspired by it. A THREAD 👇🏻
@shonareppe ‘s #AtlantisBanal is wacky & wonderful in a way I haven’t seen for wee ones before. So visually led & hilarious for everyone. It’s experimental, thought provoking, & so well crafted
@CWheelsTheatre ‘s #WHITE is so joyful (& surprisingly colourful) & MEANINGFUL for the tiniest of wee ones. It reminds us that ALL humans love laughing & FEELING (the red egg 😭) & looking at down right beautiful things
And the passion & drive behind @ImaginateUK’s support of artists to make new work that I saw so clearly at their scratch night, I think is a huge reason why so many Scottish shows for young people can challenge with form &content in a way other places just can’t
from what I’ve seen I honestly think young people’s theatre is leading the way in contemporary theatre making in Scotland. it’s taking risks, it’s visually led, it’s interesting in form, it’s responsive to an audience, it’s internationally reaching, & the scene is really thriving
It also values its audience as more than a commodity, steers away from the commercial, doesn’t forget about children until Christmas & doesn’t always default to fairytales. BRAVO 👏🏻 thanks for coming to my tedtalk. In summary: Young people are great, as is theatre, as is Scotland
