Went to a doctor's appt this week and, as usual, didn't announce myself as a doc.
I haven't been seen in an academic center in a while, so I was surprised to be seen first by a resident.
She was kind, knowledgable, and had mastered the 'eye-contact-with-pt-while-typing' trick.

When her boss came in, she slipped seamlessly into efficient apprentice mode--taking notes, anticipating orders and questions.

When her boss was done, she smiled, shook my hand, and scurried out of the room after the attending.

I wrote her an email the next day letting her know who I was, what I do, and that she is doing a phenomenal job.

I told her that I know training is grueling, and that I see her.

I'd spoken with her for 10 minutes.

Didn't take me long to know
She's already a great doctor.

I doubt I'll hear back from her, seeing as her work is all consuming.
But if paying forward some kindness helped buoy her at least a little bit, I know that I'll smile a bit bigger during these holidays.

Happy Thanksgiving, y'all.
