First of all I am sorry to hear about this situation. These doctors have families & this decision will be incredibly disruptive for them. Similar situation to the 1990s with employed docs but now going one step further by expanding role of ancillary healthy care providers. (1/4) https://twitter.com/MartyMakary/status/1199702305316245509
Then, hospitals employed docs due to favorable govt policies & then realized 5-10 yrs later that they don’t know how to manage doctors’ practices - so they let them all go. Now they are letting them go but CEOs still want ancillary income stream from referrals, MRI, PT, etc (2/4)
So now hospital systems hire ancillary providers who cost the system less in terms of overhead (salaries, etc) but actually bring in $$$ through continued hospital owned ancillary services. This raises overall cost of care but for hospital - it’s an profit positive move (3/4)
Additionally, doctors are generally considered “hard to control employees” because they question admin decisions more frequently. Relationship often depends on whether the hospital admin views doctors as equal partners or just “widget-makers” in the health care system (4/4)
