With a big snowstorm in the middle of Thanksgiving week, I want to stop and give thanks to the people who we rely on to spend this time with our families and get around the state and the country safely. People who we often take for granted.

Emergency workers and first responders who save lives and often put their own at risk during blizzards are also the people who work when most of us don't. They rearrange their own family celebrations and don't experience holidays like most of us do.

If this is you: thank you
Those who work low-wage jobs in retail, food service, and hospitality don't have the luxury of working from home. They can't afford to call in and could even get fired if they did. Blizzards and holidays don't mean a day off, they just make work harder.

If this is you: thank you
When there's a storm during the biggest travel week of the year, we lean especially hard on the people who work for the airlines, for TSA or other government agencies, and other workers who help make sure we can see our families.

If this is you: thank you
Essential local and state government workers like snowplow drivers, transit operators, and many other folks help make sure a blizzard doesn't ruin our Thanksgiving. Lots of them work on holidays too.

If this is you: thank you
Many who work serving the people who have the least (and for whom blizzards and holidays are some of the most difficult times physically and emotionally) must also sacrifice holidays and work during when it snows. It's when they're needed most.

If this is you: thank you
And for everyone else: thank you for paying taxes. Because without all of us working together to pay for the things that allow us to get around safely, it would be much more difficult to overcome a big blizzard and enjoy Thanksgiving a couple days later.
I'm thankful for lots of other reasons. But I feel like many folks don't get the acknowledgement and appreciation they deserve. If you see someone who's working one of these jobs this week, tell them you appreciate the work they do. Thanksgiving wouldn't be the same without them.
