A short thread on Huddersfield: a textiles town whose growth was boosted by the arrival of rail. The station, designed in Classical Corinthian style by JP Pritchett in 1848, is ‘one of the best early railway stations in England' (Pevsner). 1/7
The Lion Buildings opposite were also designed by Pritchett in 1852. 2/7
Proud municipalism arrives in the shape of the Town Hall, built in two parts in classical Corinthian order between 1875 and 1881. 3/7
The market hall was designed by R S Drydale, Borough Surveyor, in 1887. The Borough coat of arms states 'God helps the diligent'. 4/7
I don't know much about the former Head Post Office but it's an impressive building. The four Type K6 telephone boxes, designed in 1935 by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, are listed. 5/7
The Library and Art Gallery was built in 1937, designed by E H Ashburner. 6/7
Last but not least, Queensgate Market, 1968-70, to the designs of the J Seymour Harris Partnership with Leonard and Partners as consultant engineers. Grade II listed for 'innovative use of cutting edge technology' construction 7/7
