I'm seeing a lot of people (besides those special few who only want cartoon-y platformer mascots) not understanding the appeal or desire of seeing #ResidentEvil characters in #SmashBrosUltimate #SSBU

A Thread:
#ResidentEvil / Biohazard is the most successful and influential series in the horror game genre. It's king of the genre, even spawning a movie franchise.

Smash has reps from a variety of different game genres however, it is currently lacking someone to rep the horror side.
So why #ResidentEvil?

The RE franchise first made it's debut with ORIGINAL fan favorite Resident Evil 2 on the Nintendo 64 in October 31, 1999.

Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield would go on to be the first protagonists that #Nintendo's hardware owners would be introduced to.
Even though the series was more prevalent on Playstation during the early years, Resident Evil would associate itself more with Nintendo following RE2's release.
Capcom would go on to develop an exclusive RE title for the Nintendo 64, called Resident Evil 0.
However, Resident Evil 0's development was ultimately moved to the Nintendo Gamecube.
Speaking of Gamecube, Capcom's relationship with Nintendo strengthen, and Resident Evil would go on to find a new home on the console.

At the time, every mainstream RE title (besides the original) was available on the console.
#ResidentEvil4 (starring Leon), a former Gamecube exclusive (& another fan-favorite) went on to be a huge financial success.

Resident Evil 4 was named Game of the Year at the 2005 Spike Video Game Awards and by Nintendo Power and Game Informer.

It was a BIG deal.
Leon would also star in an exclusive Gameboy Color game called Resident Evil Gaiden.

Leon had an arguably larger presence on Nintendo hardware moreso than the first game's protagonists, Chris Redfield & Jill Valentine.
Capcom would also go on to continue supporting Nintendo with RE content such as the DS port of the original title "Resident Evil Deadly Silence." And with the (former exclusives) lightgun arcade shooters, "RE: Umbrella & Darkside Chronicles for the Nintendo Wii.
RE4, RE0, and RE REmake would also get ports on the Wii with motion controls.
Additionally, Capcom would go on to make two exclusive games for the Nintendo 3DS.

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D & Resident Evil: Revelations (former exclusive).
#ResidentEvil would continue supporting Nintendo today with ports of Resident Evil Remake, 0, 4, 5, 6, a Japanese stream only version of 7, Revelations & Revelations 2 on the #NintendoSwitch. https://www.residentevil.com/switch/
Suffice to say, #ResidentEvil has definitely earned it's representation in #SuperSmashBrosUltimate.
With Resident Evil 2 REmake's success and Nintendo's history with the franchise. There's no rep more appropriate to represent Resident Evil and the horror genre than Leon S. Kennedy. He DESERVES it. #SSBU
