GW13 Lessons Learnt – top 10 take aways on players, teams and all things FPL.

🔸Let’s start with everyone’s new favourite FPL player. Jamie Vardy had 5 (five) big chances against Brighton. This is the most big chances any player has had in any game so far this season, and is a key reason why his expected goals (xG) was as high as 2.00…
…owners were unlucky he didn’t score more than one considering his usual conversion rate. Vardy also had the most penalty box touches of any player this GW (14), the most shots inside the box (4) and the most shots on target (4). Indispensable considering upcoming fixtures.
🔸Jack Grealish also posted some impressive attacking stats and is worth monitoring. He was joint second behind Vardy for shots in the box (5) and penalty box touches (12) of all players in GW13….
…he also had the most advanced average position of any Villa player against Newcastle, and created the most chances of any player this gameweek (6). Very promising stats on his return from injury; worth keeping an eye on for when Villa’s fixtures improve from GW18.
🔸With the win at West Ham, many are getting excited about Spurs assets. However statistically there was not a significant improvement against West Ham, compared to the previous PL game at home to Sheff Utd. In fact against West Ham by comparison Spurs created less chances…
…had fewer goal attempts, and only one more shot on target overall. Son, who scored in both games, had twice as many shots against Sheff Utd. Luck may well have played a big part and we should not assume Spurs assets will now give us the consistency we all want.
🔸Another impressive win by Wolves away at a Bournemouth side who have been strong at home recently. Wolves have now not lost a game since the GW5 defeat to Chelsea. They are third best of all teams for goal attempts (72) over the last 3 GWs and fourth for shots on target (25).
🔸John Lundstram once again had the most goal attempts (4) of any ‘defender’ in the game – this is the THIRD gameweek in a row he has topped this metric. But also completely unsurprising considering he is not a defender – make the most of him before he becomes a ‘midfielder’...
🔸The Leicester defence looks like a wise place to invest at present, after four clean sheets in the row – the first team in the league to achieve four in a row this season. They’ve only conceded 7 shots on target in this period, the best in the league by some margin. Watertight.
🔸The Arsenal defence however continues its trend of conceding over 20 goal attempts in one game to lowly teams. They conceded the most goal attempts of all teams this GW to Southampton (21) and were unlucky not to lose as only 5 of these shots were on target.
🔸Southampton now jump to the top of the table for the best fixtures over the next 5 GWs. Two tasty home games against Watford and Norwich next look hugely appealing despite their poor home form. With 2 goals in 2 games (and 5 in 7) Danny Ings looks like the best Soton option.
🔸Liverpool also have four appealing fixtures ahead. A reminder that if you triple up, you must plan ahead carefully for the GW18 blank. With other well owned teams (eg. Chelsea) also having tough fixtures in GW18, it’s really worth considering what your GW18 team looks like now.
🔸Andre Gray was the only forward that started a game this gameweek who did not have a single goal attempt. His strike partner Deulofeu on the other hand had 4 goal attempts with 3 on target, ranking joint second of all players for goal attempts on target in GW13. Disparity.
