While working in a particular bank& #39;s Private Banking Unit (PBU) in the early 2000, a customer called in on the landline. B4 I could sound all polite, the call had dropped.

In less than an hour, all hell was let lose. My Team Lead had fwded a mail from the HOD received from the ED bcos the original mail had emanated from the CEO of the bank. Customer had reported.

I owned up to the inquiry but obviously being a rookie banker no one wanted to listen to me giving this was a direct query from the CEO. I was eventually queried & asked to go on a two weeks suspension.
That was when I learnt the true meaning of power & influence.

At close of work, a colleague who was the R/ship Mgr to the said prime customer took me to the client& #39;s home in Ikoyi.
To explain things & as well as plead with him.
He said, shebi you be Yoruba man, when we reach their, just prostrate & begin to cry.

Well, it so happened that the prime customer was a no nonsense technocrat, strict & disciplined man. He listened to my explanation & we both agreed it was a miscommunication.
He had used a Multilinks line to call the office landline. Drop call rate was quite high then.

He immediately called the CEO of the bank while we were there to apologize for going overboard on the telephone incident & equally asked that the two weeks suspension be revoked.
Even I felt quite influential at that time

By the next day when I resumed, all my colleagues were in shock. Even the Team Lead, HOD & ED couldn& #39;t believe it. What magic did I do?
I had defied & cracked the unwritten code of the bank.
I showed that I was not their mate in anyway, shape or colour

More than 18 years from that incidence, that particular prime customer & I have been best of friends. We share a mentor-mentee r/ship & he has helped me get through many doors that i never thought I could ever go through.
