I think many who promote similar ideas (myself included) would argue that nobody is in control of their feelings but we can all decide what to do about them in the aftermath.

2. An important critique of stoicism is that it& #39;s hard to apply in cases of serious trauma, such as being raped or witnessing the murder of a family member.

It& #39;s not reasonable to expect that someone who& #39;s had to endure that should be able to recover fully (or at all).

3. There& #39;s also the issue of people using this argument to justify their own aggressive words/behaviour.

If what you& #39;re doing or saying is a direct affront to someone& #39;s dignity or agency, you are accountable for that and you should expect that person to respond accordingly.

4. Stoics include the concept of justice as one of their four governing virtues specifically to manage these kinds of situations.

In spite of the fact that we are all responsible for our feelings, we also have to act in a way that ensures that we live in a just society.

5. TL;DR: Nobody should be expected to endure an injustice without complaint or self defense.

You do, however, have that option if you feel that it prevents other people from holding power over you and your life.
