#WarOnThanksgiving The Pilgrims were religious fanatics who didn't get kicked out of England by oppression, they left it because it wasn't oppressive enough. They left the Netherlands for the same reason, their kids were adopting the permissive Dutch ways.
This 243-year experiment in democracy and pursuit of happiness (now in danger of ending in autocracy), that's not what the Pilgrims came here to do. They wanted to "save souls" by forcing people to live a certain way and killing them if they were even suspected of objecting.
This holiday doesn't celebrate the Pilgrims and their Gilead-like quest for a theocracy. It celebrates an act of great mercy, the Wampanoag saved the Pilgrims even though they were theocratic plunderers who almost instantly betrayed them. A truly Christlike act.
But to modern-day theocrats, who still want that Gilead state the Pilgrims dreamed of, the Pilgrims were right to do whatever they did, the First Thanksgiving was OWED to them, God did that, not the Wampanoag, and talking about the Pilgrims negatively is a form of blasphemy.
