I’m so appreciative of @mendesbob for giving us real info. As we move forward in our push for accountability and results, it may be helpful to consider structural racism for a minute. https://twitter.com/mendesbob/status/1199670232253698049
Structural racism isn’t about individuals or personalities or intent. It has nothing to do with individual biases or prejudices. It’s so much bigger than that.
It’s systems and institutions which operate based on premises that are deeply embedded and therefore unseen and unquestioned.
Because there presumptions are so pervasive, any attempts at reform are ultimately unsuccessful. Regardless of the intent of the people formulating the reforms.
This is how well intentioned people end up presiding over organizations and leading initiatives which maintain the same racist hierarchies.
I too have no interest in playing the blame game. I don’t care what’s in your heart. Really.
All I care about is the results. And we keep getting the same results. Over and over and over again.
It’s time we questioned our assumptions. A budget is a list of priorities.
What are we prioritizing and why? Why do we settle for substandard results in some areas and not in others? These are questions we need to ask.
