"Too many cars in Tbilisi", say people -- Giorgi Babunashvili at @crrcgeorgia presenting his work in progress -- first (48%), third and fourth biggest local issue when #Tbilisi residents were asked in Nov 2018. #traffic #urban
Problems: ambient air pollution mostly caused by cars, acc to official data. (Shows WHO data, suggesting high levels mortality.) Road mortality, while declining is still high, with 400+, at 13.8 /100k almost double per capita of Estonia.
Then there is space usage. "You all know the comparison images bus-bikes-cars". The numbers for Tbilisi, without overcrowding, are 385 for metro, 57 for bus of 12m, 28 for bus of 8m. More cars, more crowding/traffic jam.
Modern international practice: average non-car mobility, discourage use of cars. (More roads leads to "induced demand", as Tbilisi shows.) Several examples to follow.
What @TbilisiCity is doing: public transport development (bus lanes, master plans with int expertise); encourage walking & #cycling (zebra, #bikelanes); safety & environment ( #taxi & inspection); discourage driving (parking & customs). But still: driving increased in last years.
Now it got very technical ;-) -- here the overall growth figures, registered cars grow more than GDP.
And here the bonus for those of us staying longer: how number of #Metro trips increased, year on year (around 8% last year, Oct), with a considerable drop in summer. #Tbilisi @OCMediaorg
