I’ve seen such sentiments lately, questioning & telling individuals who may criticize the actions or decisions of the government as being somehow perpetual complainers & unappreciative. The problem, the way I understand it, is the exact opposite. https://twitter.com/aalig/status/1199530326701170689

We have a PM surrounded by “yes” men/women, who seem to be possessed by servility to power. We’re making & passing risky policies with a collective ease that one would think we’re deciding on what type of breakfast to eat today.
3.

We’re so caught up in so much empty political rhetoric that we have forgotten the reality we exist in... We are a nation where half-million of our children under 5 die each year of diarrhea (yes diarrhea).
4.

93% of us still have no access to basic toilets (the highest percentage in the world). 62 million of us can’t get clean water & 57% of us don’t have electricity. Millions of our women still risk death when they become pregnant b/c they can’t access basic healthcare.
5.

Our youth are drowning in misery & meaningless b/c they can’t find work & are ending up pawns of self serving politicians. In other words, we are collectively dirt poor. So excuse me if I’m not overly impressed by people in fancy suits signing contracts,

when most of us don’t have a clue of what these decisions entail. We don’t even have journalists who are willing or able - I’m not even sure which - to do any sort of deep analysis on a systems level informing us of “what the hell is going on.”

Most people seem to be nodding along as if the changes currently taking place in Ethiopia are the most natural & positive thing in the world - political & economic history of the world says otherwise.

We have this idea that criticism is automatic ምቀኝነት - it is not. Real criticism bases itself in love. Not the childish kind of love that always tells one how great he/she is, but the real, deep demanding kind of love that wants its beloved to reach its full potential
9.

b/c it recognizes it. The kind of love that doesn’t accept its beloved to wallow in mediocrity, but challenges it to be greater. The kind that weeps when that potential is squandered. To ignore, to be indifferent, to be intellectually & morally lazy would be ምቀኝነት.

As James Baldwin said “I love [my country] more than any other country in the world &, exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually.”

I, too, deeply love my country.
