Was informed this week that our daughter's reading IEP goal progress will be measured in Lexile when she moves to middle school, a Lexile score created by a computer score, and I am pissed. That computer test won't tell me anything worthwhile about her reading. Or her.
Why is it we continue to place our most vulnerable kids in front of computers and think that they provide us with the answers we need? Why is it the educational system continues to provide better instruction to the kids who already know what to do than the kids who don't?
Why, as a parent, should I be okay with an assessment that has not involved a human being in any way? These systems tell these kids that we can't even be bothered, that what is easiest for us is best for them and it is simply not true.
