Here’s what we have to look forward to today 👇🏽
I’m André Tomlin from the @Mental_Elf

I'm live tweeting, recording podcast interviews & live streaming our panel discussions:
12.25 Next steps in researching digital tools for mental health settings
15.10 Research on implementing digital tools in to services
#DigitalMHNextSteps
Prof Sonia Johnson @soniajohnson Academic Psychiatrist from @UCLPsychiatry, Director of @MentalHealthMSc & @MentalHealthPRU, is welcoming everyone to the conference today.

You can follow us all day at #DigitalMHNextSteps
"The object of the day is for us to think about where we should go and what the next steps should be in digital mental health research"
- @soniajohnson

Please tweet your comments/questions to #DigitalMHNextSteps and we’ll do our best to weave them into the discussions
Our first speakers at #DigitalMHNextSteps are Prof @soniajohnson Director of @MentalHealthPRU & Thomas Steare @tomsteare Research Assistant at @UCLPsychiatry who will be presenting the @AriesStudyUCL

A self-management Smartphone app for Early Intervention in Psychosis Services
The @AriesStudyUCL looked at whether a Smartphone app (My Journey) designed for people using mental health services for psychosis was used and well-received, and whether a large study in this setting is possible. Here’s the protocol http://www.isrctn.com/ISRCTN10004994  #DigitalMHNextSteps
The @AriesStudyUCL My Journey app aims to improve users’ self-management skills such as symptom monitoring, identifying and employing coping strategies and having access to a relapse prevention plan #DigitalMHNextSteps

This built on original work by @S_Amani
The @AriesStudyUCL was a 12-month feasibility trial, and the results focus on user and clinician feedback on the app and aspects relating to the feasibility of the study (recruiting participants, following them up, giving participants access to the app) #DigitalMHNextSteps
. @AriesStudyUCL at #DigitalMHNextSteps
1. Successful feasibility trial of Smartphone-app in mental health services
2. Larger trial now possible, to see if My Journey app is effective in improving MH outcomes
3. Support from clinical staff varied. Some people liked it, some didn’t
App usage was lower than expected, many users & clinical staff said positive things about the app during research interviews.

@AriesStudyUCL doesn’t tell us if app has an actual effect on people’s mental health. Larger study needed to answer that question #DigitalMHNextSteps
The @AriesStudyUCL findings will be published soon, so look out for a blog! #DigitalMHNextSteps

For now, listen to general thoughts from @soniajohnson @tomsteare about developing & implementing digital interventions for people with severe mental illness https://soundcloud.com/national-elf-service/sonia-johnson-and-tom-steare?in=national-elf-service/sets/digitalmhnextsteps
Any questions for @soniajohnson and @tomsteare about this @AriesStudyUCL? #DigitalMHNextSteps
Our next speaker is Maria Giorgalli @mariagiorgalli who will be talking about New tools, new methods: A state-of-the-art methodological review of digital tools in psychiatry #DigitalMHNextSteps
Digital technology represents an opportunity to rethink the way mental health services are delivered, says @mariagiorgalli at #DigitalMHNextSteps
We have a great chance to reach people who need our help immediately & they can’t afford to wait for an appointment, ppl who can’t afford a session with a psychologist or ppl who live far from cities in places with no access to services, says @mariagiorgalli #DigitalMHNextSteps
People are more informed about their own mental health than ever before & they're managing their own mental health through digital tools & apps. It’s important to think about whether apps are actually safe and effective, says @mariagiorgalli at #DigitalMHNextSteps
What we’ve been trying to do is in accordance with @PHE_uk & the wider health system, says @mariagiorgalli at #DigitalMHNextSteps

We wanted to explore how different researchers evaluated impact, cost effectiveness & benefit of digital interventions in mental health.
. @mariagiorgalli #DigitalMHNextSteps
1. How can we evaluate digital MH tools in a way that is cost efficient, timely & also ensures effectiveness?
2. Has digital health research caught up with UX research?
3. Do clinicians, researchers, patients & NHS disagree what's effective?
Our next speaker is Prof Andrew Gumley @andygumley
- Clinical Psychologist @UofGIHW
- Interim Director @NRS_MH
- Chief Investigator on the @EMPOWER_EWS study
https://empowerstudy.net/
#DigitalMHNextSteps
The @EMPOWER_EWS study aimed to enable people to monitor their own wellbeing using a mobile app; enhance recognition of early signs of relapse; support autonomy and self-management; and improve shared decision making with mental health services @andygumley #DigitalMHNextSteps
It's possible to change relationships w service providers making them more equitable, where experiences & perspectives are respected & ppl can take a much more active role in self determining care/support they get both within & outside MH services
@andygumley #DigitalMHNextSteps
Listen to @andygumley speaking to me earlier at #DigitalMHNextSteps

We talk about how digital technology can be blended with traditional face-to-face services to help people with psychosis stay well https://soundcloud.com/national-elf-service/andrew-gumley?in=national-elf-service/sets/digitalmhnextsteps
Before finalising @EMPOWER_EWS we consulted with mental health staff, carers and people with experiences of psychosis, says @andygumley #DigitalMHNextSteps

@SimonMHR Adverse event monitoring in mHealth for psychosis interventions @jmirpub https://doi.org/10.1080/09638237.2019.1630727
. @EMPOWER_EWS intervention:
1. A mobile app to enhance monitoring & awareness of wellbeing
2. Peer support to promote curiosity, normalising, self-management & reducing fear of relapse
3. HCP assessment to support shared decision making & relapse prevention
#DigitalMHNextSteps
Great that @EMPOWER_EWS looked at adverse events. So important that digital mental health researchers think about this!

"There were 13 app related adverse events, affecting 11 people, one of which was serious."
- @andygumley speaking at #DigitalMHNextSteps
This is how @andygumley et al developed the @EMPOWER_EWS app for people with psychosis #DigitalMHNextSteps

Fantastic to see the coproduction and clear links to peer support in this brilliant work. Lots to learn from this work!
