A daft idea that could only be muted by saps who didn't have to sit through the last one. https://twitter.com/d_boeselager/status/1199612711656738816
Here's more on it. Despite the Laeken Mandate, the drive to make the EU more democratic and devolved last time was ditched within a matter of days - once it became clear people who supported reform rather than a Brussels power grab were in a tiny minority. https://www.politico.eu/article/berlin-and-paris-outline-plan-for-eu-makeover/amp/
This is the text as released by Politico. Not entirely sure why it is in English! https://www.politico.eu/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Conference-on-the-Future-of-Europe.pdf
Note the objective: it's not about democracy and accountability, but about making the EU "more united and sovereign". Subsidiarity isn't even given a weak hat tip.
The remit is massive: security/defence, neighborhood, digitalisation, climate change, migration, fight vs inequalities, “social market economy” model (including social rights, industrial and innovation policy, trade, EMU, competitiveness), the rule of law and "European values"
Anyone who is arguing that the UK stays in the EU, and anybody who is arguing the UK remain closely affiliated to EU structures, has *huge* questions to answer how they intend to avoid the integration. Or, admit they seek to embrace it.
If anyone is missing the era of the Backstreet Boys and S Club Seven, here's what was happening in the Convention back then. (Also useful for understanding how the path to Brexit was laid.)
