Back at #PrivateWireless in London. Probably the biggest takeaway so far is most people see a role for telcos: as spectrum providers, integrators, and lots of interest in hybrid private/public models
This probably releflects a telco leaning in the audience/speakers, but enterprise speakers (e.g. Shell) also say if they can use the shared public network, they prefer to do because it's cheaper
There are obviously many scenarios where you need to deploy private radio (and core). Coverage, control, security, performance (w/ SLAs), etc.
One interesting comment from Telefonica: customers often want to keep their data on-prem for security reasons, even though it is demonstrably less secure than keeping it in a Tier Telefonica data center / cloud service
No really good answers so far on how to integrate private networks with their own core with wide-area public networks. Dual SIM and/or roaming interfaces (S6a) are most often suggested. MoCN gets the odd mention for #PrivateNetworks None of these are ideal.
And right on cue, Toon Norp from TNO (a Dutch R&D org) brings us the most magnificent term from 3GPP R16: Public Network Integrated Non Public Network (PNI-NPN)
Some people bring their own 4G wireless network to the show. Here's Nanda Menon with @Athonet_PriMo (using 10MHz of someone's spectrum) #PrivateNetworks
Here's the @NetNumber system with carry case. In this demo, the core network runs on a PC (in fact, in this case, the IMS is running on a USB) Small cell is by @ipaccessLtd Big TV screen is optional
Good session from Catherine Gull, @ThreeUK and Karen Poulter, Port of Felixstowe on Private LTE. Seems like some good opportunities for 5G in due course (e.g. for remote-operated cranes using HD cameras -- 12 per crane. The two operational cranes right now use fiber)
Nice anecdote from The Port of Antwerp at #PrivateNetworks. Speaker heard you could get a LoRa system (for IoT unlicensed spectrum) for €10K. He bought 8 and had them installed and working within 4 weeks.
