Being discriminated against, attacked and threatened because of your sex is bad for your mental health. ⁦ @YWTrust⁩ research with ⁦⁦ @ucl⁩ today reveals young women are most likely to experience sexism and are five times more likely to have depression as a result. 1.
Our study showed the daily assault of sexism young women experience: at school, at work, on transport and on the street. 82 pct of young women who had experienced sexism said they had been subjected to street harassment. 2.
Furthermore the sexism that is ruining young women’s peace of mind and freedom is having a last impact on their mental health: those who experienced sexism and depression still reported psychological distress four years later. 3.
We call on government now to urgently invest in mental health services specifically for women, that provide single sex spaces and an understanding of the impact of oppression and discrimination on women’s mental health. 4.
And we need to end sexism. We need high quality sex education to end harassment in schools and society. We need a legal duty on employees to prevent harassment in their workplaces. We need women’s equal representation in politics and working life. 5.
We want equal investment in the social infrastructure that women are pushed into providing for free, to support economic advancement of men. 5.
Young women are our future. We should all be their allies in breaking down barriers that belong to the past. You can read our full report here: https://www.youngwomenstrust.org/assets/0001/2669/Impact_of_sexism_on_young_women_s_mental_health.pdf #TrustInWomen
