This morning I took a taxi to the JHB CBD to meet up with a fashion designer. I decided to document my walk back from The CBD to Mountain View checking how many Dustbins will I come across Along the way. The walk is estimated 1 hour 26 min & drive is 17 min bus is 38min
Did you know one of the ways you can play your part for the planet is by joining lift clubs when going to work! Walking instead of driving! Using public transport & traveling long distances by train @environmentza
I made a stop at Ghandhi store & a security guard alerted me that my bag is open! I was hoping to find a nice unhealthy vegetarian meal! But Spar was not about that life, so I left. Their Oros was also warm, so I left it
By the Grace of the environmental Gods! I managed to find a place that has Magwinya’s & spotted my first Dustbin at Ghandhi square. I have to say! There were a lot of Bins around and the place is reasonably clean @environmentza
This ended up being my unhealthy meal! I found there was a lot of plastic use for such a small meal! Imagine how many people buy magwinya everyday for breakfast & how many plastics get used and thrown away! @environmentza but bins were very easy to find
Not only do the streets around Ghandhi Square have a lot of Bins! But there are people who are always cleaning around & emptying the bins @environmentza
Also the streets that have Bins are really really clean. There are atleast 2 bins for every 10 steps that one takes
The places that have bins also have very well kept vegetation. I found the street to be quite busy & im sure it has peak hours & yet still very clean. The bins also seem to serve multiple purposes for people too
@environmentza

I noticed that there were a lot of these metallic dustbins along with the Normal dustbins on this road I was walking on! @environmentza
From Mclaren street! This is when the landscape starts to change & so does the level of cleanliness & monitoring of the spaces for litter. @environmentza
This street is amongst the last few streets before you are about to enter New Town that has a lot of Bins & they are tendered to. @environmentza
It was a while before I saw another Bin again. But I did come across a group of ladies who are employed by Pik it Up. I am assuming maybe they target spots which are missed
This shocked me! Right next to a Bin & where people who manage the streets were cleaning! There were many spots like this @environmentza
I also found there is a lot of human poop in the streets of Joburg. This guy was unaware of the poop all over the garbage bin until I asked him about it. The contrast of the beautiful buildings & over filled bins & poop @environmentza
I like the idea of having Dustbins around & using them as means of advertising. Brands can start being innovative by donating & advertising on garbage bins & putting them everywhere! Instead of wasting money on environmentaly unfriendly campaigns! @environmentza
One thing I noticed as you get to Bree taxi rank. You get these things that look like garbage bins, but they are packed with sand, which defeats their purpose @environmentza
For a place that is a Mecca of transporting people to work and school. I’m shocked by the lack of bins around Bree! Where there aren’t a lot of Bins! There is a lot of garbage. I also didn’t see as many Pik it Up cleaners here, as I did at Ghandhi Square @environmentza
Did you know going for a second year in the row @CocaCola_ZA is the biggest global polluter more than any other brand or company! They continue to package their products in plastics. @environmentza
This is one side of the Mandela Bridge! It’s super clean with Bins everywhere. You can never say at any moment, you might get mugged
I was kinda tired & I saw this @JohnnieWalkerSA Billboard “Keep Walking” felt like a message from the universe to keep Walking

When you get to the other side of the Mandela Bridge. Braamfontein side! There is only one Bin @environmentza
Interesting again! Where there are a lot of Bins, the vegetation really thrives & the areas are very clean @environmentza
So I had to make a stop at Wits to refuel & do some school admin, before heading back on the road! Will update once I am home @environmentza
I decided to walk towards empire road so I can cut through Hilbrow. The road I was on only had one bin but also cleaners along the road. @environmentza
I walked along Nellie road past Parktown towards Hilbrow and there was only one bin. Inbetween this road and Hilbrow, there are a lot of people who commute along this route because there are 3 schools & office parks. But one bin @environmentza
As I enter Hilbrow! There is only one bin at the end of the road! This is a densely populated area & there are taxis everywhere @environmentza
So from here onwards connecting to Louis Botha! There are no Dustbins anywhere! Just @CityofJoburgZA plastic bags @environmentza
Along the Reyavaya station! Still no dustbins @environmentza
Hilbrow has its charms, like this Fire station that has been around since 1910. Still no bins! Just @CityofJoburgZA @CleanerJoburg plastic bags @environmentza
As I entered Berea, decided to support local business & cool down. Still no bins along Louis Botha! Just plastic bags. This route is used by a lot of commuters! The only place I could chuck the plastic away was in this plastic bag @environmentza
I have now been on Louis Botha for close to 15 minutes walking, there is Bin to be seen anywhere! The whole road reeks of urine, which means people relieve themselves anywhere @environmentza
Maybe I am abit paranoid! But isn’t this electric connection along Louis Botha abit unprofessional? The lines are running on the floor & then tape is keeping everything together? @CityofJoburgZA still no bin in sight @environmentza
Another reyavaya station & plastic bags instead of bins @environmentza
This is where things get interesting. When you get to Keps. There were atleast 8 bins outside the school. But nothing along Louis Botha @environmentza
However across the road in Yeoville! There is a no dumping sign & one dustbin to cater to a mini taxi rank & block of flats @environmentza
Continued along Louis Botha! Saw a metro cop give one of these guys that haul garbage a bottle of water & R10. That touched my heart @environmentza
Continued along Louis Botha before taking a turn home & still no Bins in sight @environmentza
12KM’s & 16 197 steps later! I have made it home
one thing I realized on this walk is that if we had more Bins & public toilets along our roads. The streets would be a lot cleaner @environmentza
